Although there were some changes in the ranking positions, the car models in the top ten most popular list in Germany remained largely the same in 2017 compared to the previous two years.
The Volkswagen Golf maintained its usual position as Germany’s favorite car in 2017. However, for the second year in a row, the number of Golfs sold in Germany was lower than the previous year. Yet the Volkswagen still sold more Golfs in Germany than the next three cars combined. The VW Tiguan rose from sixth to third most popular car in Germany in 2017 to give Volkswagen another clean sweep of the top three best-selling models. In contrast to the first two, Tiguan sales volumes actually increased. Third is the highest ranking for the Tiguan or any other SUV in Germany.
the mercedes-benz c-class was the fourth most popular car in germany in 2017. the c-class has been fourth for the last three years.
The VW Polo fell from third to fifth lowest sales in Germany in 2017. The lower sales are largely due to a well-publicized model change for the Polo towards the end of the year. Despite the trend towards off-roaders, the polo is likely to regain its usual third-place finish in Germany in 2018.
the audi a4 and the skoda octavia each moved up one position despite sales being fairly stable from a year ago. In contrast, sales of the Opel Astra fell sharply, forcing the Astra down from fifth place a year ago to eighth in 2017.
despite slightly lower sales, the vw touran improved two positions and was the only new entry in the top ten list in germany in 2017. the touran replaced the audi a3 which dropped from ninth to twelfth best-selling weak.

In 2017, off-road vehicles captured a 15% share of the German new passenger car market, with sales increasing by 22%.
