Are Harmony Speakers Any Good? My Experience – Improvecaraudio.com

You can choose many different speakers when you want to upgrade your car’s factory audio system. If you’ve been looking for something worth investing in, you’ve no doubt heard of harmony.

harmony audio offers several lines of popular, widely available, and easy-to-install speakers to fit many makes and models of vehicles, but are harmony speakers any good?

Reading: Harmony car speakers review

harmony speakers are inexpensive, well-built, and will improve the listening experience in most cars over stock speakers. Harmony speakers are excellent, solid speakers at a reasonable price.

Tip: Having great speakers installed in the car is the first thing we look for right after buying a new vehicle. The good thing is, to get great audio for the money, you don’t have to take out a loan. my favorite harmony speakers are harmony audio ha-c65 with excellent 150 w rms. you can find them on amazon for less than $70, and if that size doesn’t fit in your car, the series includes a wide selection of speakers from 3.5″ to 8″, including 4×6 and 6×9 oval models.

In this article, I’ll go over a selection of speaker harmony deals and provide some tips on how you can save money by knowing what you want in your car’s audio system.

what are harmony speakers?

harmony audio manufactures subwoofers, full-range speakers, subwoofer enclosures, and accessories to install your new speakers. Their equipment is reasonably priced, and like many sellers of reasonably priced items, Harmony Audio imports their products from China.

in the 1970s, many department store chains sold speakers and stereo components under their own name. These components were usually imported from Japan and were often made from the same parts as highly regarded brand name Japanese equipment from companies like Pioneer, Hitachi, or Kenwood.

harmony speakers are the house brand of a missouri corporation called hifi sound connection. today many people despise the quality of Chinese imports. Still, China has a well-developed audio industry and “chi-fi”: Chinese hi-fi audio equipment has become increasingly popular among audiophiles.

the materials that harmony uses in the speakers have been tested over time:

  • Rubber surrounds on speakers will last longer than foam surrounds. +
  • ultra-high-end speaker companies like wilson audio use silk dome tweeters.
  • carbon fiber diaphragms make excellent speaker drivers due to their rigidity and weight.
  • These materials are cheap, as harmony speakers are aimed at the lower end of the car audio market, but that doesn’t mean these speakers sound bad. today, most aftermarket car speakers can play music reasonably well.

Thankfully, advances in acoustics, design, and manufacturing have taken a lot of the guesswork out of building loudspeakers.

harmony speakers are not the best car audio speakers. instead, they’re solid aftermarket speakers that will likely be better than your car’s factory audio system. they sell for a reasonable price and will do a decent job if installed correctly.

    full-range harmony speakers

harmony audio makes two lines of full-range speakers and they come in most standard car stereo speaker sizes. but keep in mind that even if a replacement speaker has the same dimensions as your old one, its mounting holes may be in different locations.

    • Before you replace any speaker in your car, make sure you know its dimensions and where the mounting holes are located. if there are problems you can get a speaker stand that will allow you to put the new speaker on. You can also drill new holes in the mounting area to connect your speaker.
      • make sure you know the vertical height of your old and new speakers. if you had to remove a panel to get to your speaker, a slightly larger tweeter can be a mere fraction of an inch taller and still make panel replacement impossible.
      • carbon series

harmony audio carbon series speakers feature durable carbon fiber cones and a 1″ (25.4mm) silk dome tweeter. Many audiophiles, myself included, prefer the sound of a silk dome tweeter to metal or polyethylene because while silk may have less detail, it sounds less harsh and resonant. when you’re listening inside a metal box, that can be important.

                                      • harmony subbass

harmony also makes many different subwoofers. These big, heavy woofers will need to be installed in a cabinet that fits your vehicle and is connected to your electrical system, although some of them may require an additional amplifier.

Check to see if your car’s electrical system has enough extra current to power a subwoofer before installing them.

                                        alloy series subs

Harmony’s alloy subwoofers use an aluminum driver cone for precise reproduction that gives you tight, fast bass. the alloy series are 2 ohm subwoofers so make sure your amp can handle a 2 ohm load before connecting them. Running the amp with too low an ohm load can cause stereo shutdown and damage to the head unit.

Harmony’s carbon subwoofers use carbon fiber cones for those who like bass with an added boost. If you want to test your system in a db drag race, harmony carbon subwoofers will play as loud as you want without breaking the bank.

Carbon Series subwoofers offer dual terminals, making it easy to connect to another subwoofer and run dual subwoofers in your car. Unless you have a good-sized car interior, this probably isn’t necessary.

You’ll also need to check the ohm ratings before adding a second, third, or fourth subwoofer.

Harmony flatline subwoofers are available in 10″ and 12″ (254 and 304.8mm) sizes and are designed for shallow cabinet depths. Shallow subwoofer cabinets can be placed under a seat or on the rear deck and take up less space than a large subwoofer box.

If you drive a smaller vehicle or don’t listen to a lot of bass-heavy music, a shallow under-seat subwoofer is probably more than enough for your needs. a small subwoofer won’t play as loud or deep, but that can be beneficial in small cars or on family trips.

                                                      • subs from the monolith series

Harmony Monoliths live up to their name, being the largest speakers in Harmony’s line of subwoofers. with 1 or 2 ohm ratings, they’re going to require a beefy supplemental amplifier.

Running 3200 watt peaks on your subwoofer won’t just overload your car’s electrical system. It will also put a lot of strain on your alternator. Make sure your vehicle has the juice to power the fantastic bass before installing this or any other beastly subwoofer in your system.

Many car audio fans believe that subwoofers exist to rattle windows, but the real job of a subwoofer is to add depth to music and strengthen the lower octave. The Pace Series will do just that without making outrageous power demands on your car’s electrical system.

                                                                • I’ve mentioned “ohms” many times in the above descriptions, and that information is critical when installing new speaker equipment.

Ohms are a measure of how much electrical resistance the current encounters as it passes through the speaker. The lower the ohms, the more current can flow to your speakers and the harder your amp has to work!

this video from ps audio’s paul mcgowan will give you a clear explanation of ohms:

                                                                  harmony subwoofer enclosures

If you don’t want to build your own subwoofer, HiFi Sound Connection subsidiary American Sound Connection produces subwoofer cabinets.

harmony audio also sells three pre-built enclosures with the subwoofers installed.

installing a subwoofer isn’t too complicated. This short video from Parts Express will give you a visual guide to installing a simple subwoofer:

These Harmony subwoofers will fit in most trunks, as long as your car amplifier can handle a 2-ohm load. if that is not possible, you will need to add an additional subwoofer amplifier or have someone else install the subwoofer for you.

Today’s smart cars rely on their electronics more than ever, and many of your car’s functions use the same electrical system that powers your stereo.

many head units in modern cars also handle navigation, voice commands and rear view cameras. repairing these systems can be a painful and expensive experience. With that in mind, if you’re unsure, always have a professional do the job.

Here are the subwoofers with enclosures sold by Harmony Audio.
