Distinctive styling and engaging driving dynamics set the 2019 Mazda CX-5 apart from the competition. The wonderful Mazda looks more expensive than it is, which adds to the charm. a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine with automatic transmission and front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive and a powerful turbocharged or diesel engine are optional. Its luxurious interior puts it in a class above its price peers, and there are plenty of driver assistance features available. Based strictly on numbers, the 2019 CX-5 isn’t the best at anything. what’s new for 2019?
The 2019 CX-5 receives significant updates including new available features, a new top-of-the-line model and its first turbocharged engine. The latest announcement is the biggest news, as we previously lamented Mazda’s limited powertrain options. The CX-5 now has an optional 250-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder that is exclusively paired with all-wheel drive and can only be had on the top two trims. this includes the all-new exclusive model which has a host of luxury features such as additional wood and chrome accents in the interior, ambient interior lighting, brown leather upholstery, exclusive exterior items and a 360-degree camera system. with front and rear parking sensors. . Every 2019 CX-5 gets revised suspension and steering, as well as the latest version of the company’s G-Vectoring Control Plus system, the benefits of which we’ve explored before. The infotainment system is now also available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A four-cylinder diesel engine also finally joins the lineup, but it’s less powerful than the turbocharged engine and is reserved for the more expensive version.

Likes: Great ride and handling, responsive at low speeds, quick-shifting automatic transmission. Dislikes: Turbocharged engine reserved for top models, diesel has no advantages, can only tow max 1500 lbs.

The CX-5’s standard 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine has excellent throttle response when pulling away from stop lights or cruising around town, so it feels faster than it really is. It’s at higher speeds, such as when trying to pass or merge onto the freeway, that the non-turbocharged engine feels underpowered. The 250-hp turbocharged version we tested provided much quicker acceleration, firing from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and doing 50-70 mph in 4.6 seconds. While the turbocharged engine is also paired with a nimble six-speed automatic transmission, it can only be had with all-wheel drive. Likewise, the new-for-2019 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine (called SkyActiv-D) is paired exclusively with all-wheel drive and can only be had in the most expensive exclusive model. The diesel makes 168 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque, which is less than the gas-powered turbocharged engine.
You don’t have to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or appreciate its excellence. For sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make it an awesome Sunday cruiser. But it also soaks up rough roads without shock and has the ride quality of crossovers costing twice as much. this harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping isn’t stiff or buoyant. At the same time, the Mazda comes to life on curvy roads. Electric power steering provides satisfying responses and effectively connects the driver and front wheels. the exclusive model we tested had a reassuring feel to the brake pedal that worked without delay and without being overly sensitive when applying the brakes.
real world fuel economy and mpg
The CX-5 has average EPA estimates compared to rivals that have similar power. However, in our testing, the Mazda was the only one to beat its EPA highway rating. The all-wheel drive non-turbocharged version earned 32 mpg, which matched the Honda CR-V we tested. The front-wheel drive non-turbo CX-5 improved that performance by 1 mpg. We also tested a CX-5 with the more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder and standard all-wheel drive; It got 30 mpg on our 200-mile highway fuel economy route, which was 3 mpg higher than its EPA rating. While we haven’t tested the diesel version, the EPA estimates it will get 27 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

I like: premium cabin design and materials, exceptionally quiet interior, user-friendly infotainment. Dislikes: Slow touchscreen responses, limited charging capacity.

Wake up inside the top-tier cx-5 models and you might think you’ve been kidnapped by hijackers who have an audi or a mercedes. Top-notch materials and a fabulous design make it feel especially upscale. The floor-mounted accelerator pedal feels better than the more common version that’s suspended above the floor, the well-designed steering wheel is directly in front of the driver and doesn’t tilt slightly, and all front seat armrests are to the right. same height for optimal comfort.
Every CX-5 features an attractive 7.0-inch touchscreen that sits above the dash like a floating tablet. It satisfies with an intuitive rotary control mounted between the front seats and a simple interface. Too bad the relatively small screen size and aging menu layout are worse than contemporary rivals. apple carplay and android auto are available, but not on base models.
Sacrifices come in small packages: In this case, the cx-5 had just nine carry-on bags behind its rear seats. Its cargo volume actually decreased with the 2017 redesign; A 2016 CX-5 we tested had one more carry-on with the rear seats up and three more with the rear seats folded. however, the new model’s rear storage space is more functional, with a completely flat load floor. It also has several nooks and crannies in the cabin for smartphones and other loose items. the center console has a deep tray at the front and a useful compartment with a removable shelf.
